Harmful Practices Training (Female Genital Cutting and Breast Ironing)

Why is the BHSCP providing this course?

This course will raise awareness, identification and support processes of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Breast Ironing to multi-agency practitioners, enabling them to identify and safeguard those children at risk more confidently. This important multi-agency training is being presented by a very experienced external trainer, who has worked closely with local authorities and police forces to combat these behaviours and can bring personal knowledge to these training sessions.

Target Audience:

Members of staff, who work predominantly with children, young people and their families, parents or carers, and who could potentially contribute to the assessment, intervention and reviewing the safeguarding needs for a child or young person, where there are safeguarding concerns, and or potential risks of exploitation.

Learning Outcomes

  • Define Female Genital Mutilation and breast ironing & why families engage in these practices
  • Identify risk indicators before / after FGM and breast ironing has taken place
  • Demonstrate different ways to engage and support families to safeguard the child more effectively
  • Assess, manage, and refer using the risk assessment process to protect & increase safety of victims and children

Training is free for Children’s Services staff, school staff, foster carers, community/voluntary sector groups, BHCC contracted organisations in Children’s Services, statutory health organisations, police and probation and all early years (including private early years) who are working in Brighton & Hove. For private organisations and those working outside the city the cost is £120.
