Harmful Practices Training (Female Genital Cutting and Breast Ironing)

Why is the BHSCP providing this course?

This 2-hour live webinar will raise awareness of FGM and breast ironing/flattening to multi-agency practitioners. Practitioners will be supported to understand the identification, support and referral processes to enable them to safeguard and identify children at risk of these types of abuse more confidently.

Target Audience:

Members of staff, who work predominantly with children, young people and their families, parents or carers, and who could potentially contribute to the assessment, intervention and reviewing the safeguarding needs for a child or young person, where there are safeguarding concerns, and or potential risks of exploitation.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the definitions of Female Genital Mutilation and breast ironing/flattening & why families practice these rituals.
  • Recognise the types of FGM and potential community issues
  • Describe the impact on health of FGM and Breast Ironing/flattening for victims, including children
  • Identify risk indicators before / after FGM and Breast Ironing/flattening has taken place
  • Have an awareness of the Legislation – Mandatory Reporting / FGM Protection Orders

Booking

BHSCP courses for April and May 2024 are now live and can be booked via the Learning Zone platform and courses for the rest of the year will be live on Learning Zone by the end of April 2024. Agency Leads have been contacted requesting account information requirements for professionals who will require a Learning Zone account to view and book training from April.  Once an account has been created for individuals they will receive an activation email from the Learning Zone.  If you need a Learning Zone account and haven’t yet requested one please email BHSCP@brighton-hove.gov.uk .

Training is free for Children’s Services staff, school staff, foster carers, community/voluntary sector groups, BHCC contracted organisations in Children’s Services, statutory health organisations, police and probation and all early years (including private early years) who are working in Brighton & Hove. For private organisations and those working outside the city the cost is £120.
