Operation SOLAH Virtual Briefings

This hour long briefing is to explain the joint initiative between Sussex Police and colleagues at Wise/Barnardo’s.

SOLAH stands for “safer online at home ” and was started in November 2021 as a specific pathway for POLIT to refer children and young people who were either uploading self-generated images to the Internet or sharing indecent images of children between themselves or on online.

Once an appropriate case is identified we refer to WiSE or Barnardo’s to make contact with the family and offer safeguarding advice and online education sessions to both parents/carers and the child/young person. This can take place once or over a number of sessions. These organisations are much better placed than POLIT to deliver this kind of support.

Not every case will get referred. Where we believe there is evidence of online grooming, previous history of sexual offending, significant or ongoing Children’s Services engagement already or concerns about wider risks to case workers from the family (DV, drugs, violence , sexual offending etc) then the matter will remain with Police, possibly with CS involvement , to resolve.

Learning Outcomes:

  • To gain an understanding of the decision processes and thresholds for referral from the police to either WiSE or Barnados.
  • To be aware of what the support offered might look like.
  • To clarify what action could be taken by Police if the issue is a criminal offence.
  • To think about how this might affect your work with any family.
