Neglect – what is it and what does it mean to you?

“Neglect is the persistent failure to meet a child’s basic physical and/or psychological needs,

likely to result in the serious impairment of the child’s health or development”

How do we identify or recognise neglect in the households we work with?

Brighton and Hove Safeguarding Children Partnership, alongside our partners in both East and West Sussex know that this is a priority area for all of us.

In Brighton and Hove we have looked at how to promote the early assessment of Neglect.

And have bought the licence to use an NSPCC model called the Graded Care Profile (GCP2)

We are also working with partners to look at the strains of having a very small baby and have agreed across Sussex that we will all be signing up to the ICON project.

You can find more information about both these projects on the partnership website.

We would also normally be running face to face training sessions about Neglect

The current training programme is suspended due to COVID19, however there are training offers that have been moved on line, and we are looking at adding the training for GCP2 in the near future.

We are still asking that if you have a concern about a child or young person that you talk to someone.
